Tomorrow: Digital Learning Day

dldTomorrow, February 6, 2013, is Digital Learning Day, which means that teachers, librarians and national organizations will collectively celebrate Digital Learning Day 2013, a day to recognize educators and librarians who create inspirational learning opportunities for young people by integrating technology use and practices in and out of the classroom. The American Library Association will support Digital Learning Day 2013 as part of the continued effort to highlight the everyday work done by librarians to support digital literacy.

Digital Learning Day, sponsored by the Alliance for Excellent Education, is the culmination of year-long activities in K-12 schools, public libraries, and among educators from all walks of life.

Through our ongoing work with the American Library Association’s Office for Information Technology Policy Digital Literacy Task Force, we have learned about the critical role librarians play in developing resources for classroom teachers and in designing dynamic learning opportunities for students and the public.

On February 6, 2013, schools, teachers, librarians and national organizations will celebrate Digital Learning Day 2013, a day to celebrate educators and librarians who create inspirational learning opportunities for young people by effectively integrating technology use and practices in and out of the classroom. The American Library Association (ALA) will support Digital Learning Day 2013 as part of the continued effort to highlight the everyday work done by librarians to support digital literacy.

The ALA is asking librarians across the country help spread the word about Digital Learning Day. The Digital Learning Day website lists numerous ways you can participate, but here are a few:

  • Write a blog about your digital learning experiences
  • Plan an activity on Digital Learning Day
  • Launch a project or lesson using digital learning or discussing technology’s role in learning on that day
  • Invite a local business person in to your class to talk about the skills needed to succeed
  • Do a presentation to the parent-teacher association about the benefits of digital learning

Libraries: Please Share Digital Learning Day Activities

The American Library Association (ALA) Digital Literacy Taskforce is calling on all libraries to put a social media megaphone to their activities planned for Digital Learning Day, February 1. As part of the taskforce’s efforts to raise awareness of libraries’ work in this arena and to capture stories and examples of this work, the taskforce asks library staff to tweet (using hashtag #DLDay), blog and even photograph (Flickr) and videotape (YouTube) digital literacy activities and testimonials throughout the day.

Digital Learning Day, which American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) are supporting as core partners, is a culminating event in a year-round national awareness campaign to improve teaching and learning for all children.

“Digital Learning Day is more than just a day” said Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education, co-chair of Digital Learning Now and former governor of West Virginia. “It is about building a digital learning movement that truly provides a quality education for every child.”

Libraries also can share examples of how they are engaging learners on the showcase page of the Digital Learning Day website.

“Libraries are essential partners in digital learning and digital literacy,” said taskforce Chair Michael Borges. “Digital Learning Day is a great opportunity to gather examples to illustrate our work so that we may more effectively advocate and highlight current practices to stakeholders.”
