ALA recently learned about the pending closing of the library on the Army installation Fort Huachuca in Arizona. We are especially concerned because this is part of a pilot program that could provide impetus for further library base closings throughout the country. Our contacts reported that the Northeast Region Office (NERO) — which includes bases such as Fort Belvoir, Fort Myer, Fort Hamilton, and the Aberdeen Proving Ground — is interested in expanding the legislation (2005 Department of Defense Auth. Act) that approved the pilot program for two Army bases.
Please see the letter from ALA President Leslie Burger to Acting Secretary of the Army Geren (PDF). The letter was also copied to Arizona Representatives and Senators as well as Senate and House leadership of the Armed Services Committees.
